The Friends of Chatham & District has secured £10,000 of National Lottery funding towards the restoration of the only surviving Chatham & District bus, a 1939 Weymann-bodied Bristol K5G. The 150-strong group estimates it could cost £150,000 to have the double-decker restored by professionals, but hopes to reduce the cost by using volunteers. It intends to use the award - the maximum available from the Lottery's Awards for All scheme - to identify the work content, skills and materials required for a full restoration, and to attract more funds by helping promotional activities. GKE 68 was No.874 in the 54-vehicle green, cream and brown Chatham & District fleet, which Maidstone & District took over in October 1955.
