To those who remember its heyday, Hanson of Huddersfield was an example of a rare breed: an urban independent with some of the scale, staying power and appearance of subsidiaries of larger groups. An operator that provided local bus services until 1969 and whose name lives on - just - as a coach travel brand over 40 years later.rnIt was part of a larger and longer established (and still thriving) road haulage business, which in turn was the springboard from which James (later Lord) Hanson and Cordon White created the City-listed Hanson Trust, one of the most acquisitive British businesses of the 1970s and 1980s. Lord Hanson's father Robert, who dominated the family-owned business until his death in 1973 aged 82, was the sometimes ruthless figure driving the bus and coach business and who also, incidentally, founded cut-price petrol retailer Jet Petroleum in 1953.
