German railway bids to buy Arriva

Shares in arriva have shot up in value since German state railway Deutsche Bahn (DB) confirmed on 17 March that it has tabled an undisclosed cash offer to buy Arriva - the third largest UK bus and rail group and the only one with substantial mainland European operations. News of the approach followed earlier talks between Arriva and Keolis, the transport group part-owned by French state railway SNCF, about a possible merger or joint venture. Those talks ended without agreement.
