New twist to the hybrid saga

By the end of this year, 150 more hybrid buses are likely to have been ordered as part of successful tender bids. Operators will fund them, since there is currently no government or other assistance towards buying low-carbon buses. There is no specific requirement for hybrids on any route re-tender and until recently several tender announcements linked hybrids to a specified route. For example, Stagecoach East London will use all 26 of an order for Alexander Dennis Enviro400Hs on route 15 (Regent Street-Blackwall). But the two latest contract announcements, in which Metroline has retained all 11 routes involved, includes 24 hybrid double-deckers for unspecified routes.
