North-west wales is famous for its mountains, lakes and beaches. Wonderful for tourists who mostly visit by car, but not so wonderful for bus operators seeking profitable routes. One of the few major commercial routes connects the resort and shopping town of Llandudno with the university city of Bangor, home to the region's general hospital. Most services continue beyond Bangor to Caernarfon. Arriva Cymru (and its Crosville Wales predecessor) was the sole operator of commercial services between Llandudno and Bangor until May 2004, when Llanberis-based independent KMP launched hourly Llandudno-Bangor services, which continued to Anglesey. It subsequently increased service frequency, introducing through workings to Caernarfon and Llanberis, but hours of operation never encompassed evenings or Sundays.
