It was 11 august 1994, the day i passed my PCV test and could drive a bus for hire or reward for the first time. I turned 21 that year and die company I wanted to work for had an informal policy of not employing drivers under 25, so I sought gainful employment elsewhere. That would not be difficult, as this was Liverpool, a city with a huge variety of operators and an equally huge thirst for drivers. The next day, I jumped on a bus (as a passenger) to the Speke depot of Merseyside Transport Ltd (MTL). Speke was the oversized base for its MerseyRider low cost unit, which was always looking for drivers. Clutching my pass certificate, I spoke to the supervisor.
