Reading hybrids show 22% fuel saving as new vehicle orders flow fast

Reading Transport - one of several Green Bus Fund winners to announce further orders for low carbon buses - says its first six Alexander Dennis Enviro400H hybrid double-deckers are showing a 22% improvement in fuel consumption over the council-owned company's conventional diesel fleet. Monitoring over four weeks in February and March showed the six buses - built to the manufacturer's 11.4m maximum length - achieved an average fuel consumption of 7.22mpg against 5.91 mpg for the other double-deckers in the fleet, most of which are Scanias. The percentage reduction is less than some of the headline figures quoted for early hybrids in London, though this may reflect already lower fuel consumption by diesel buses in a provincial town.
