When ailsa trucks, the Scottish-based importer of Volvo trucks, started developing the Ailsa it was largely in response to an operator backlash against the unreliability of rear-engined double-deckers. Well, truth be told, one particular operator's backlash. The Scottish Bus Group was not totally delighted with its rear-engined Daimler Fleeuines, while its perception of the Bristol VRT was that Scotland's roads were littered with broken down examples. What was needed was a bus with the engine at the front.
