This has been looking at why our privatised rail system costs the taxpayer three times as much as dear old British Rail.rnSir Roy McNult/s interim report has highlighted the huge subsidy that goes to regional services and while this is no great surprise the time must have come to tackle the problem. Network Rail costs are too high and the standards applied universally to track used by 140mph expresses or trundling branch line railcars must be changed.
