Do we need handrails in so many different colours?

The specification for buses used for London work is comprehensive, though at least interior decor is left to individual operators. Yet it seems surprising that there is no standard colour for interior handrails and stanchions.The rules for interior layout can be traced back to Leyland Fleetline DMS2456, which was rebuilt in 1984 following work on a new interior by Ogle Design. A wider area around the entrance,a straight staircase and handrails in 'high visibility green' were features. The layout of most London double-deckers since then has followed this standard.
