When The Hole diggers reduced part of Brighton Road, Purley to a single alternate line, the horrendous traffic disruption was inevitable. In some cases it took an hour to cover one mile. It was inevitable too that local newspaper headlines such as 'elderly left out in the cold by buses' would appear. However, the cutting of some of the local services left much to be desired. As on previous occasions, Arriva London South-operated route 466 (Addington Interchange-Croydon-Purley-Old Coulsdon-Caterham on the Hill) raised particular complaint, with many buses turned at Purley or Old Coulsdon. Beyond Purley, much of the route is on its own.
