Oh gosh, yet again has the exuberance of youth failed to grasp history. I refer to last month's article Roger Davies about National Bus Company corporate identity. First, it was in 1 948 that the Clement Attlee-led Labour government first proposed the setting-up of area bus boards, eventually to encompass the whole of Great Britain. The first envisaged was the North-East Area Scheme, which would have swallowed all or parts of company operators East Yorkshire (British Electric Traction), Northern General (BET), United Auto (British Transport Commission), West Yorkshire (BTC), municipals Darlington, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Sunderland, Tees-side Railless Traction Board and West Hartlepool and the larger independents, such as Venture Transport.
