Bigger engines longer lives

If the 500-series engine was one of the Leyland National's less endearing features to bus operators, high-powered versions in trucks were more problematic still, and with the likes of Volvo, Scania and DAF making inroads into the market the engine was dropped altogether. Bus operators still favoured their more traditional choice of engine, the ageing but powerful and reliable Leyland 680 and Gardner 6LXB. The 680 had proved its ability to be developed farther: DAF was one of several overseas vehicle builders who had licence-built Leyland engines and developed them for their own purposes, and Leyland set about developing new versions of the 680 - the L11 and turbocharged TL11.
