What whingers some of my fellow senior citizens appear to be (You Write last month). We all lived through the austerity of the 1 950s and must know how very affluent we are today in comparison. We are the generation who had university grants and no fees, retired at 60 with index-linked pensions and got state pensions at 65. How very fortunate we are — and unlike many a young couple struggling on low incomes and trying to find somewhere to live, most of us have long since finished with mortgages. If anyone deserves free bus travel, it is these young low earners, not us.
