I meet Peter Huntley at his managing director's office within Go North East's headquarters in Gateshead — an isolated office block surrounded by modern housing on the site of the old Bensham central works. Past generations of innovative engineers designed and built side-engined single-deckers there for Northern General in the 1930s and in the early 1970s converted two front-engined double-deckers into the one-man-operated Tynesider and Wearsider. Huntley is no more of a slave to convention than those predecessors, but it is as a strategist, marketeer and motivator that he has made his mark at Go North East.
