Engineers in the north-west Bulgarian town of Vratsa have opted to refurbish the entire fleet of up to 23-year-old Russian ZIU and Hungarian-made Ikarus trolleybuses after council officials axed funding for new vehicles. The overhaul is expected to extend the lives of 26 trolleybuses tor between six and seven years at a cost of ￡21,000 pounds each, 10 times less than buying new vehicles, says maintenance chief Nedyalko Tsekov. Funds for fleet replacement are not expected before 2014 at the earliest.
