With such a large and long production run spanning years of upheaval in the UK bus industry, it was surely inevitable that there would be some non-standard - even unique -R-types. The three two-door Ailsas for London Buses in 1984 included V3, with front entrance and staircase (which, as on most Ailsas, ascended forward to deposit upper deck passengers above the driver), supplanted by the same at the back. One consequence of the rear staircase was to position the lower deck emergency exit in the rear wall, using a central door between two smaller windows.
