If designers of bus bodies were rewarded in proportion to the number built, then the ones at Walter Alexander ought to have been among the highest paid. Production of the Y-type single-decker spanned more than 20 years, while the contemporary double-decker, starting with 1962 Glasgow Corporation Leyland Atlantean LA2, was superficially comparable with AL-type Atlanteans turned out for Merseyside PTE in 1984. By then, the next generation of rear-engined double-deck chassis was widely available -the Leyland Olympian, Dennis Dominator and MCW Metrobus. Alexander showed highbridge versions of its new R-type for the first time on a pair of prototype Olympians at the 1980 Motor Show, Strathclyde PTE LO1 and a demonstrator for the Far East.
