Moulton's dream coach

Dr Alex Moulton is widely remembered as the pioneer of the suspension of the Mini car and for his invention - 50 years ago - of the Moulton bicycle with its small wheels. But the enormous energy of this approachable man had many other achievements including the development and building of a lightweight twin-steer eight-wheeled coach. That had had its origins in BMC, the then British Motor Corporation, which included the cars, vans and trucks of Austin and Morris and built the Mini. Its management was increasingly concerned by the success of newcomer Ford and established Bedford in the coach market. Both were building increasing numbers of relatively inexpensive chassis, with Bedford in particular also enjoying success in export markets.
