Among the many remarkable things that can be said about the London bus network over the past 14 years is how much cleaner it has become. By specifying new vehicles meeting the latest emissions limits, bringing many of its contractors' oldest vehicles close to the same standards, making the most consistent investment in hybrid and some of the other low carbon technologies in the UK and conducting parallel trials of zero-emission vehicles, Transport for London has achieved some impressive reductions in the quantity of the most harmful traffic-generated pollutants in the atmosphere.
