The statistics are worth revisiting. Buses in Britain carry about three times as many passengers as trains, yet the railways in England outside London attract at least twice as much public money as goes towards bus services and passengers. These statistics remind us of the environment in which spending cuts are estimated to have taken around £500million in real terms out of public support for buses in that part of the UK since the 2010 general election - sufficient to fund every noncommercial bus service in 2010/11. We can make informed guesses at some of the reasons for such contrasting - some might say disproportionate - support for one form of public transport over another.
