Small Brazilian trolleybus system at crossroads

A question mark hangs over the future of trolleybuses in the Brazilian city of Santos amid an urgent need to replace six Mafersa/Villares buses built in 1986. Only four of the buses are currently used on the single route 20 by the Compania Santida de Transports Colectivos (CSTC). City transport operation is being put out to tender this July. Local government has expressed support for trolleybus operation, which celebrated 50 years in 2013, but no decision has been made. Together with the two Sao Paulo metropolitan systems, Santos is one of only three trolleybus systems in Brazil.
