SMRT orders its first double-deckers

Singapore's SMRT Corporation -operator of the island state's mass rapid transit rail system as well as some of its buses - is introducing its first double-deckers this year as part of an investment in 573 new vehicles. SMRT Buses - known until 10 years ago as Trans Island Bus Services - has ordered 201 tri-axle 12m Alexander Dennis Enviro500s for delivery in 2014/15 along with 372 MAN single-deckers to upgrade its 1,200-vehicle fleet, the second largest in Singapore after ComfortDelGro-owned SBS Transit. It is the largest fleet renewal to date for SMRT, which still has a large fleet of step-entrance Mercedes-Benz O405s. The order with Alexander Dennis renews a relationship that saw TIBS buy Alexander-bodied DAF SB220 and Scania Lll3CRLs in 1995.
