摘要

With the opening of the Luton-Dunstable busway, there was a discussion of whether busways should or should not be guided. It was therefore interesting to read Brian Patton's latter (You Write last month) about the Nantes busway with the accompanying photograph clearly illustrating that it is not guided. I feel that guidance installation is unnecessary. The driver still has to be present. The only justification for guidance is that opposing buses can pass each other more closely. But that does not justify all the expense and complication of guidance. The Runcorn busway works perfectly well without it. Paris has several unguided examples. A list of busways in Britain usually includes Ipswich. While Ipswich is provided generously with bus lanes, it has no busway. The one referred to actually is in Kesgrave, a guided example 4miles away and over which there is some controversy.
