Network growth will come in the suburbs, says Daniels

There is room for plenty more buses in London's suburbs, says Transport for London's surface transport managing director Leon Daniels, who was talking with BBC broadcaster Robert Elms at a Year of the Bus event at the London Transport Museum. With London's forecast population growth equal to the population of Birmingham, he says most of that will have to be in the outer suburbs, where larger buses than at present will be essential. He sees no need for any more buses serving central London. When Crossrail opens in 2018, it will take some weight off bus services, but Daniels says previous experience of similar events such as the reopening of the East London Line had shown that the expected reduction in bus passenger numbers did not happen, except to a very small degree.
