US agency shuts 52 operators in safety swoop

Federal regulators in the United States have shut down 52 interstate coach companies after an eight-month safety crackdown. The campaign involved vehicles from outfits that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had previously allowed to stay in business despite known safety violations. The operation was prompted partly by a February 2013 crash near San Bernardino in southern California in which eight people were killed, the Los Angeles Times reported. Agency administrator Anne Ferro spoke of a 'wake-up call' for the FMCSA. She said the companies affected were not 'fly-by-night' carriers but operators who regularly transported groups of young people and senior citizens.
