Alfred Mackenzie had a dream. Following his apprenticeship as a marine engineer, he was appointed as a qualified steam engineer by the National Traction Engine Owners' Association, which set him the task of inspecting the country roads and bridges and assessing their strength and suitability for use by traction engines.
