摘要

The Transport Yorkshire Preservation Group has secured the future of West Yorkshire PTE 588 (SUG 588M), one of the last 33ft 'jumbo' Leyland Atlanteans ordered by Leeds City Transport and new in 1974. The Roe-bodied AN68/2R was bodied in Leeds and entered service shortly after the PTE took over the municipal bus undertakings in Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield. They were built to a standard design specified by and bought almost exclusively by Leeds, with panoramic windows, two doors and a centre staircase. Besides 'jumbo', they were also nicknamed 'Tommy Lord boxes' after the last Leeds general manager who became the PTE's first director general. When it withdrew the final examples in 1993, Yorkshire Rider donated a few of them to local charities. Eureka, a children's museum and learning centre in Halifax, received 588 and placed it in store, pending finding a suitable use for it.
