Solaris electric double artic 'could challenge trams'

Polish manufacturer Solaris is working on a 24m double-articulated electric single-decker based on the revamped Urbino that was given its world premiere at the Hanover IAA exhibition last September. Power comes from electric motors using batteries, which are backed up by roof-mounted Ballard fuel-cells, says deputy chief executive officer Dariusz Michalak. The same drivetrain is being tried out in Hamburg where the city's Hochbahn municipal took delivery of two 18.75m Solaris fuel-cell electric bendybuses just before Christmas. 'Our objective is to create a completely emission-free means of urban transport. This bus could compete with a tram thanks to its unusually big passenger capacity,' says Michalak.
