Stagecoach East Scotland's X7 Coastrider is a successful example of something that has disappeared from much of the British bus map since the 1980s: a long interurban local bus service. They formed part of the lifeblood of operators like Ribble, Midland Red, Crosville, Southdown and the Scottish Bus Group for decades, but while there are some notable survivors today - quite a few run by component parts of Stagecoach - many disappeared when their operators were fragmented into smaller businesses and also struggled to maintain punctuality - and traffic commissioners' windows of acceptable lateness - on increasingly congested roads.
