The Big Lemon, the Brighton independent that fuels its small fleet with recycled waste cooking oil from city restaurants, is trying to obtain what could be the UK's first solar powered electric bus. Managing director Tom Druitt wants every community in the country to have access to a zero-emission bus service, powered by renewable energy, by 2030 and is working with Brighton Energy Coop to obtain such a vehicle for his routes. 'We have been running buses and coaches on recycled oil for nine years, but the buses still have emissions,' he says. 'CO, CO_2, SO_2 and particulates are dramatically reduced by running on biodiesel, but NOx is still a big problem. The future for sustainable transport is electric buses running on renewable energy - no emissions and almost zero carbon footprint.
