The vote for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union came as a shock to many, and it shows how far the political and business elite are out of touch with their economically polarised electorate. Voters were angry, and so numbers like that shown in the picture above resonate, even though they are not true. The battlebus in the picture above, which everyone will have seen, shows what is supposed to be the weekly UK payment into the EU budget. But it is a lie and the Leave campaign knew this, but was happy to push this lie because it promoted its cause. It felt no shame because all it was interested in was winning, rather than giving people facts. The inference was that if we left the EU, this money would be available to spend on other things such as the National Health Service. But now all that has been forgotten, because it was untrue.
