Alan Townsin, one of the most influential postwar bus authors and editor of Buses Illustrated - as this magazine was then known - from 1959 to 1965, died on 9 April aged 90. He stepped into the editor's chair following the death of John Smith, who steered the magazine through its most formative years from September 1951. Editing Buses Illustrated was a part-time activity, and Smith and Townsin were colleagues at AEC in Southall, Smith in the publicity department and Townsin an engineering draughtsman. Their shared enthusiasm for buses not only fostered a friendship but also found Townsin writing and help produce the magazine, making him the perfect successor in 1959.
