Reading orders StreetDecks and pilot hybrid conversions

Extensive trials of competing products have led Reading Buses to order six Wright StreetDecks in the first phase of a three-year plan to buy 40 new double-deckers. It has also commissioned the trial conversion of two of its hybrid double-deckers using two different drivelines. The Cummins-powered Alexander Dennis Enviro400 - as a hybrid and more recently the Euro6 MMC straight diesel - has been Reading's preferred double-decker in recent years, but it says trials last summer favoured the StreetDeck, which has a Mercedes-Benz OM934 four-cylinder engine. Reading's specification calls for micro hybrid fuel-saving technology and, for the first time on the model, automatic engine stop/start.
