Open data at heart of Buses Bill

The forthcoming Buses Bill, which the UK government hopes will pass into law early next year, will extend the availability of open data on fares, times and routes already obtainable in London to the rest of England. Revealing the first details of the Bill at the annual UK Bus Summit in London on 11 February, England's bus minister, Andrew Jones, spelt out that open data will be one of its defining features as part of the government's aim to put passengers at the heart of its overhaul of bus operation and reverse the decline in ridership. Open data is regarded as one of the fundamental features of the regulated bus regime in London, providing information on all public transport in the UK capital and underpinning the Oyster and contactless card payment systems that passengers trust to provide them with the best value fare for any journey they make.
