The withdrawal of millions of pounds of central government funding and the threat by at least one of this year's candidates for mayor of London to impose a moratorium on New Routemaster purchases is leading Transport for London to consider cheaper options for future fleet replacement. One of the most drastic, echoing what happened after Ken Livingstone was elected mayor 16 years ago, is to reacquire examples of a past generation of London double-decker and make them fit for operation throughout the third and fourth decades of the 21st century.
