Nottingham City Transport and Reading Buses once again came out on top at last year's UK Bus Awards. With Lothian Buses also not far behind, it is worth asking what makes an award winning bus company. Some might observe that municipal ownership makes all the difference, but aside from these top three starlets, a far greater number has performed so badly they have either gone out of business or been ripe for takeover. So it is more than who the owner is. A sense of local connection is definitely important, particularly being involved in local communities served. The use of the city or town name in the bus company name is a huge help, as I found at Brighton & Hove. It invokes a real sense of local pride and loyalty in the community, provided the service provided is of the right quality.
