Tyres aged 10 years and older will be banned from front wheels of all buses, coaches and lorries throughout Great Britain from later this year. Roads minister Baroness Vere, who also is the buses minister for England, says legislation will be laid before parliament in the autumn, implementing the ban on the use of older tyres throughout England, Wales and Scotland. She says this follows an extensive investigation, including research commissioned by the Department for Transport, which indicated that tyres suffer corrosion of their steel components and hardening of rubber as they age and that this could cause them to fail. The legislation will require the age of the tyre to be clearly visible. The 10-year limit will also apply to retreaded tyres, with the date of the retreading to be marked and maintained in a legible condition.
