Final 12 months of Leicester's matchless D9s

The D9, with its characteristic combination of halfcab and slightly set back front wheels, was Midland Red's last homemade double-decker, of which 345 were built between 1958 and 1966. The first two started their lives in Leicester, almost one third of them operated in Leicestershire at some stage in their lives and it was in Leicester that the last 13 were based in January 1979. That total fell to six by 31 December that year, their last day in service. Mike Greenwood, then seven years out of school and working for Leicester City Transport, devoted a lot of 1979 to photographing the dwindling collection of what some consider to have been the Midlands' answer to the contemporary London Routemaster.
