Lothian Buses is in an expansive mood. When deregulation brought SMT, the predecessor of First Scotland East, into competition within Edinburgh in 1986, Lothian responded with services extending beyond the city's boundaries. That process has continued and continued, with Lothian purchasing First's Musselburgh and North Berwick depots in the summer of 2016. These have formed the nucleus of East Coast Buses, replacing both First's identity and that of Lothian Country Buses, a cream-and-green liveried subsidiary that distinguished buses competing beyond the city-zone flat fare area.
