Two frequent contributors to Buses Illustrated in its first decades, their names familiar to our first generations of readers, died in August. Michael Tozer was 87 and Fredrick York was 45min short of turning 85. In the more formal 1950s and early 1960s, they were known only by their initials — M. J. Tozer and F. W. York. Tozer enlightened the readership on Bristol (the manufacturer especially), York on the Far East, especially Singapore. Michael Tozer penned the Un-Tilling Bristols series that began in issue No.19 for July to September 1954, adding his knowledge to various photographers' pictures. Bristols were generally supplied only to operators associated with the Tilling Group, which had come into state ownership through the British Transport Commission, so those with municipalities and British Electric Traction subsidiaries were a source of fascination.
