The one part of the UK bus industry to remain in state ownership is today's Translink, the Ulsterbus and Metro operations in Northern Ireland, which in 1989 came through a Monopolies & Mergers Commission investigation with the declaration that this was 'an efficient low-cost, lean organisation with short chains of command, supported by loyal, hard working and frequently courageous staff'.
