New light priorities signalled as penalty enforcement remains patchy

Transport for London has awarded a 10-year contract to Siemens Mobility to deliver an upgraded road network management system. The announcement came as a survey revealed differences in boroughs' use of penalties for improper use of bus lanes.The new Real Time Optimiser (RTO) system will revolutionise the current traffic light control system and help TfL make better use of road space. A crucial element will be the ability to automatically adjust traffic signaltimings to minimise traffic delays and give priority to buses, especially when they are detected as running late.
