Edmonton rediscovers electrics 11 years on

The Canadian city of Edmonton, which closed its last trolleybus routes in 2009, is returning to electric traction with an order for 25 United States-built Proterra battery buses, due in service by the summer of 2020. The 40ft (12.2m) Catalyst E2 single-deckers will replace 25 diesel buses in the Edmonton Transit Service fleet in what the agency describes as a milestone that supports the long-term vision of the Alberta city for green public transport and emissions reduction. 'We're excited to work with Proterra and be at the forefront of integrating electric buses and emerging technology into our existing fleet,' says Eddie Robar, branch manager of ETS. 'Proterra's clean-running and quiet electric buses are winter compatible, have a range of up to 400km [250miles] and contribute to our shift toward more sustainable transport, a low carbon city and high-quality transit service for Edmontonians.'
