State Renewable-electricity Standards

State Renewables Portfolio Standards (RPS) require utilities to buy amounts of electricity generated from renewable-energy sources. "These programs have emerged as one of the most important drivers of renewable-energy deployment in the US," said Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and one of two primary authors for a new report, Renewables Portfolio Standards in the United States: A Status Report with Data Through 2007. "As the popularity and importance of these RPSs increase, so does the need to keep up with the design, early experience, and projected impacts of the programs. Our report is tailored to do so." Today RPS policies are in place in 25 states and Washington, DC, applying to nearly 50% of the total, US-electricity load. Four new states joined the RPS roster in 2007.
