Until recently, the concept a postdoctoral scholar postdoc) was new in China although it first appeared about 125 years ago, when Johns Hopkins University adopted an apprenticeship model of high-level training. Few. if any, ordinary Chinese people understood what a postdoc does when, in November 1984, CHEN Hesheng, one of the first three postdocs China had ever had, entered the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) after having obtained his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the support of CUSPEA, a US doctorate program started in 1979 for Chinese physics students.
