Initiated in April 2000 with support of the National Basic Research Program, dubbed "973 Program," a multidisciplinary project under the title "Biotic Origination, Radiation, Extinction and Recovery in Major Geological Intervals" has won a bumper harvest in research results. Under joint sponsorship of the National Natural Sciences Foundation of China (NSFC) and CAS, it was conducted by the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology & Paleontology (NIGPAS) in cooperation with more than 70 scientists and 50 graduate students from 12 research bodies including the CAS Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology & Paleoanthropology (IVPP) and Peking University. It is a grand teamwork of Chinese paleontologists.
