摘要

The history of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion and migration from the Upper Devonian Bakken and Mississippian Lodgepole source rocks in the Williston Basin has been successfully replicated by a 330-km long TEMISPACK model, running from the centre of Williston Basin to the Wapella oilfield in Saskatchewan. The model shows that oil generation is the cause of overpressures in the Bakken Fm., where shale vertical permeabilities must be as low as 10~(-2)-10~(-3) nD when overpressures are around 15 MPa. Hydraulic fracturing threshold was not commonly reached. Yet, our model suggests that expulsion efficiencies are as high as 0.85. Observed very low Bakken shale porosities (0.03) are entirely consistent with this result. They seem to account for the unusually low S1/TOC values of mature Bakken source rocks, while the low storage capacity in Bakken shale pores explains why expulsion efficiencies are high. A model of secondary migration, constrained by a lithologically-based regional permeability structure, shows that the greatest portion of oil expelled from Bakken sources remains dispersed in Madison carbonates. In the model, a portion of the Bakken-sourced oils does accumulate, both in Bakken strata, where they are uniquely sourced by Bakken shales, and in the Madison reservoirs of the Nesson Anticline, where they mix with oils from Lodgepole sources. Model accumulations at the subcrop of the Madison Gp. are uniquely sourced by the Lodgepole Fm. These theoretical results agree with recently revised oil families attributes. Our study suggests that, within rich, mature source rocks of low permeability and porosity, most oil resides in the pore space, rather than being retained on the kerogen. Model results discount inferences that expulsion threshold of low permeability rocks is only a function of kerogen retention capacity. The source rock physical environment must also be accounted for.
