The fiftieth anniversary of the Bulletin comes at an uncertain time for arms control and disarmament. Extraordinary gains have been made in recent years in reducing nuclear weapon arsenals, but it is unclear whether the Clinton administration can consolidate these gains and negotiate further steps to reduce nuclear danger. Presidents Reagan, Gorbachev, Bush, and Yeltsin made historic contributions to world peace by negotiating treaties designed to drastically reduce the numbers of nuclear weapons and to eliminate chemical weapons.
