Namibian port's manganese role under scrutiny

South African firms have begun exporting manganese from the Namibian port of Lue-deritz, but it appears that they did not have the required environmental permits to do so. It is understood that Trade-Port Namibia and another South African firm had contracts with the port operator, Namport, to export 0.36 Mtpa of manganese through the port. Trade Port Namibia was asked to remove all manganese from the port, and it has been reported that this has been done. The ore had been stockpiled about 2 km from the port. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has placed a temporary block on the exports while the matter is considered more fully.
